Modeling a Large Coastal Upwelling Event in Lake Superior

چکیده
An extraordinary strong wind-driven upwelling event occurred in Lake Superior summer of 2010 when the lake was strongly stratified. In this paper, a detailed three-dimensional (3-D) investigation current and thermal structures during conducted using situ observations, remote sensing products, results long-term numerical simulation. A 3-D finite-volume coupled ice–ocean model tailored for Laurentian Great Lakes employed purpose. The validated with temperature observations at National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration buoys mooring data from 2010. observed satellite imagery station reproduced by model, showing cooling as much 10°C August along northwestern coast. relationship between alongshore wind offshore thermocline displacement (upwelling front) derived theoretical work (Csanady, 1977, https://doi.org/10.1029/JC082i003p00397) used to calculate front movement found be close agreement prediction. significant correlation stress change zone coefficient ?0.87. simple linear heat balance explained most variability temperature.

Spatial distributions of zooplankton during coastal upwelling in western Lake Superior
Zooplankton distributions during coastal upwelling in western Lake Superior were mapped with a high-frequency (192~kHz) sonar system that consists of an echosounder and a navigation receiver connected to a microcomputer. An acoustic transect after a September storm revealed a sloping sound-scattering layer, traceable more than 5 km offshore, in the thermocline between an upwelling water mass an...
متن کاملModeling nearshore-offshore exchange in Lake Superior
Lake Superior's ecosystem includes distinct nearshore and offshore food webs linked by hydrodynamic processes that transport water and tracers along and across shore. The scales over which these processes occur and their sensitivity to increasing summer surface temperatures are not well understood. This study investigated horizontal mixing between nearshore and offshore areas of Lake Superior o...
متن کاملCoastal upwelling in a warmer future
[1] Coastal upwelling helps set the physical context for marine ecosystems, and upwelling zones are among the most productive regions of the global ocean. Unlike earlier models, two state-of-the-art climate models exhibit little change during the next century in the magnitude and seasonality of coastal upwelling, but climate models are still probably not sufficiently developed (for example, the...
